STRENGTH SPORTS RECOGNITION PROGRAM SUBMISSIONS

Written by:

Amateur Athletic Union Strength Sports has announced August 1, 2015 as the deadline for submission of packages for the AAU Strength Sports recognition program for Powerlifting, Olympic Weightlifting, Feats of Strength and Combine.

The Brother Bennett Award, recognizing service to AAU Strength Sports, Athlete of the Year award, and Strength Sports Hall of Fame criteria are all outlined in the Strength Sports policy available HERE.

Additionally, AAU Strength Sports is adding a designation of Strength Sports Academic All-American, available to k-12 students who participate in the strength sports and attain a GPA of at least 3.4 (out of 4).  To qualify, students or their parents must submit the student’s end of year report card, which designates the student as being on their respective school’s honor roll.

National level awards are highly competitive.  For Brother Bennett, Athlete of the Year and Hall of Fame, AAU Strength Sports members must submit a detailed resume highlighting activities that justify their nomination.  The nomination packages for each award will be reviewed by an awards committee of the AAU Strength Sports Board of Directors.

The Brother Bennett Award has been given by AAU Powerlifting since 1999, and is a lifetime service award, recognizing extraordinary, selfless service to AAU Strength Sports and the idea of drug-free competition.

The AAU Strength Sports Athlete of the Year Award (Junior & Senior level) is earned by the male and female athlete with the most successful competitive year in any Strength Sport discipline, as defined by championship wins and national and world records.  Students K-12 are eligible for Junior Athlete of the Year, and athletes above the high school level are eligible for the senior award.  There will be a male and female Athlete of the Year in both the junior and senior categories.

The AAU Strength Sports Hall of Fame was originally founded as the AAU Power Lifting Hall Of Fame in 2013, but has been expanded to include Strength Sports athletes from all disciplines, including legacy honorees from the early days of American weightlifting and powerlifting.  Potential HOF candidates are encouraged to submit packages for review by the awards committee.   The awards committee will also review AAU archives for recommendations for legacy awards at this year’s HOF awards ceremony.

Full details are contained in the Strength Sports policy on recognition, which was updated in 2015 (CLICK HERE).   Nomination packages should be sent via email (subject line: 2015 AAU Strength Sports Awards) to Hal Pittman hal.pittman@yahoo.com and John Crofton bayoustatebarbell@gmail.com   , copy to AAU Strength Sports Chairman Martin Drake naturalpower@earthlink.net .
