Senior powerlifter Ray Fougnier set four world records and was selected as the Best Lifter of all competing men at the Amateur Athletic Union’s 2016 North American Championships last weekend. Fougnier, whose travel was sponsored by the Oneida Indian Nation, grew up on the Nation’s homelands in central New York and hopes his powerlifting success will help inspire Native Americans of all ages to embrace exercise and healthy living.

An inspiration to seniors and Native Americans everywhere, 73-year-old Oneida Nation Member Ray Fougnier set four world records last weekend at the 2016 AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) North American Powerlifting, Weightlifting & Indoor Feats of Strength Championships in Laughlin, Nevada.
Fougnier won the men’s 70-74 age division, while setting new world records for the class in the squat, bench press, deadlift and total overall score categories. He was also selected from all male participants of every age group as the Best Lifter in the entire event. This incredible performance qualifies Fougnier for the AAU World Powerlifting Championships to be held September 23-25, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Oneida Indian Nation is proud to sponsor Fougnier in his travels, applauds his success, and strongly supports his mission to inspire Native Americans to embrace fitness and health at all ages. A retired teacher and former head of the American Indian program at Cornell University, Fougnier grew up on the Oneida Nation’s homelands in central New York and now splits his time living in Tennessee and Michigan.
Despite not joining powerlifting until into his 70s, Fougnier has achieved incredible success in the sport in recent years. The AAU World Championships this fall will be Fougnier’s third international championship event, and he holds state records in both Tennessee and Michigan.
